Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP)
MROPs are required to operate radiotelephone stations aboard certain vessels that sail the Great Lakes, aboard vessels of more than 300 gross tons, greater than 65 feet, and vessels that carry more than six passengers for hire in the open sea or any tidewater area of the United States.
US Maritime Academy Chicago can proctor all FCC tests by being a Test Center for iNarte (International Association of Radio, Telecommunication, and Electromagnetics), and the Element 1 test to get you your MROP. In addition to the test, we offer a prep class so that you have a better chance of passing.
US Maritime Academy Chicago believes that it is important to understand the questions and answers, not just to pass the test through memorization, but to know and understand why an answer is correct. This will make you a better, safer radio operator.
The MROP Prep Class is typically offered following the Spring and Fall Captains Classes. The fee for the MROP Prep Class is $35. The MROP Element 1 Test is immediately after the Prep Class. The proctoring fee is $20 to USMA Chicago and $65 to iNarte and $35 to FCC. iNarte also offers an online test for $85.
